Through an act of the United States Congress in 1988, VA-affiliated non-profit corporations (referred to as “NPCs”) were established. In so doing, Veterans Affairs Medical Centers throughout the U.S. have the ability to administer research activities through their NPC, funded by private pharma and device companies, foundations and federal institutions – essentially any source of funding other than Veteran’s Affairs itself.
The East Bay Institute for Research & Education (EBIRE) is one of 80+ VA-affiliated NPCs across the United States. Organized as a 509(a)(1) our work is delivered through the Veteran’s Affairs Northern California Health Care System, or “VANCHCS,” using funds from grants, public gifts and contributions – again, any source of funding other than Veteran’s Affairs itself.
Through VANCHCS, EBIRE has access to highly-trained clinical, scientific and academic specialties, where most individuals hold dual appointments at both VANCHCS and the University of California, Davis. VANCHCS is the 10th largesst VA medical center in the US,with Veterans and their families residing from Oakland north and east to the Oregon and Nevada borders: nearly 40,000 square miles. EBIRE has its headquarters in Sacramento, at the VANCHCS main hospital facility, and a regional office in the East Bay City of Martinez, at the VANCHCS large outpatient and rehabilitation clinic.
In addition to these locations, VANCHCS has outpatient clinics located in the following Northern California Cities from which Veterans can also be recruited:
The EBIRE–VANCHCS collaborative provides Veterans with the opportunity to access state-of-the-art care, and to foster an environment for scientific and intellectual exchange.
